"At an ancient time the Great Spirit, in the form of a large bird, stood upon the wall of rock and called all the tribes around him. Taking out a piece of the red stone, he formed it into a pipe and smoked it, the smoke rolling over the whole multitude. He then told his red children that this red stone was their flesh, that they were made from it, that they must all smoke to him through it, and as it belonged alike to all the tribes, the ground was sacred, and no weapons must be used or brought upon it." Found in petroglyphs across southwestern America, Kokopelli appears as a hunch-backed man playing a flute. He sybolizes fertility, both in people and the rains that bring growth to the crops, the male principal, and the concept of the significance of protecting seeds. Usually depicted as old, bent under his heavy load, he visits various communities, impregnating the young women drawn to the tones of his flute playing.
Celebrated among the Zuni, the Pueblo, the Hopi and the ancient Anasazi, he brings happiness and harmony to their homes. The magic from his flute was thought to stimulate creativity and help good dreams come true, and the gifts in his sack bring joy and abundance.
